Installing Chain & Sprockets, Battery, Rear Spools, and Rearsets on a 2011 Yamaha FZ8
By Metric Maniacs
In this project, we tackle several upgrades on a 2011 Yamaha FZ8, including installing a new chain and sprockets, replacing the battery, adding rear spools, and swapping in a set of rearsets. Whether you’re looking to freshen up your bike or make it more functional, these upgrades are a great way to improve performance and convenience. Let’s dive in.
Step 1: Installing Rear Spools
Rear spools are a handy addition if you use a bike stand to lift your bike for maintenance. They’re easy to install, requiring you to remove the rear axle bolts and replace them with spools. Simply screw the spools into place, ensuring they are tightened securely. This step adds convenience to your bike maintenance routine, making it much easier to lift the rear wheel for chain adjustments or cleaning.
In our case, a bolt was broken off in one of the spool mount locations, so we had to drill and use an extractor before we could install the new spools.
Step 2: Replacing the Chain and Sprockets
The first step in this process is replacing the chain and sprockets. Over time, your chain and sprockets will wear out, causing poor performance and an uncomfortable ride. Start by lifting the rear wheel off the ground using a bike stand. Then, remove the front sprocket cover and loosen the front sprocket nut. Remove the old chain by either cutting it or using a chain tool to break the link. In this case, the chain was held on with a clip-style link, so we could just take it apart. Once the chain is off, remove the rear sprocket by removing the wheel and unscrewing the nuts.
With the old components out, install the new sprockets in reverse order, reinstall the rear wheel, then feed the new chain through the swingarm and connect it, adjusting the tension according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Ensure everything is torqued to the correct specs.
Step 3: Replacing the Battery
Next up is swapping out the battery. Begin by removing the seat or any body panels that block access to the battery compartment. Disconnect the negative terminal first, followed by the positive terminal. Then, remove the old battery and dispose of it properly. Place the new battery in the compartment and connect the terminals, making sure the positive terminal is connected first, followed by the negative. Secure the battery in place and double-check all connections.
Step 4: Installing Rearsets
Finally, we move on to swapping in a set of rearsets. Start by removing the stock footpegs and controls, including the shift and brake levers. Once everything is removed, install the new rearsets by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure to adjust the brake and shift levers to your preferred position, and ensure all bolts are tightened to the correct torque specs. We also put blue threadlocker on all the rearset fasteners.
With everything installed, take a step back and admire your work! Perform a quick test ride to ensure everything feels solid and operates smoothly.
